Joseph Kessels is Dean of TSM Business School of the University of Twente and professor of Human Resource Development and Corporate Education. Since 1977, Kessels has been partner in Kessels & Smit, The Learning Company. As an academic he published on training and development, knowledge productivity and the implications of an emerging knowledge economy. He co-authored, with Rosemary Harrison, Human Resource Development in a Knowledge Economy (Palgrave Macmillan 2004).
From 1995 –2000 he held a similar chair at the University of Leiden. He was awarded the first 'Training & Development Prize' of the NVO2, and ‘The Teaching Award’ of the University of Twente.
